2015 Track

Tristan qualifies for state at GHSA Sectionals

Tristan Lynn has ended his very busy spring by qualifying for the GHSA Track State Meet at Jefferson. Tristan ran a 10:44.43 and placed seventh in the 3200 meter race qualifying him for the state meet. He also ran the 1600 meter race and finished eleventh in a time of 5:00.37 and did not qualify for state. Tristan's 3200 state meet race will be on Friday, May 15 at 6:30 p.m.

At the Region 1 AAA Track Meet in Brooklet, Lynn finished second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:00.37 and he also qualified for sectionals in the 3200 meters in a time of 10:58.68. In addition to running track, during the spring, Tristan also played shortstop and pitched for the Toombs County Junior Varsity baseball team and during the fall he was the top male runner on the cross country team.

Tristan Lynn and JoAnn Gomez were Toombs County High School's top finishers at a cross country meet held at Vidalia High School. Lynn ran the three mile course in 19:45 and finished second. Gomez finished strong picking off runners and placed sixth (27:06) leading five Lady Bulldogs, who all finished in the top 20. Watch race highlights Video    

The Bulldogs had only three runners in the race. Alfredo Gomez (21:12) placed 10th and Bernardo Cruz (24:56) was 33rd. Arleni Tinoco (29:56) was the second Lady Bulldog to cross the finish line and she was 11th overall. Danadia Fulsom (31:19) finished 16th, Dominique Jones (31:32) 17th and Deyra Colmeneras (31:54) 19th  

The Toombs County High School cross country teams both finished fifth in an event at Vidalia High School. The Bulldogs finished in front of Region 1-AAA opponents Dodge County and Appling County. Tristan Lynn finished seventh and Alfredo Gonzalez 17th. The Lady Bulldogs placed ahead of Appling and were led by JoAnn Gomez, who was ninth, and Dominique Jones, who placed 20th.

Runners from Vidalia High School and Vidalia Heritage won a cross country meet staged at Toombs County High School. Paul Dixon, from Vidalia High won the boys race while Valya Harrell, from Vidalia Heritage finished first in the girls race. The to two placers from Toombs County were Tristan Lynn and Alfredo Gonzalea for the Bulldogs and Lucero DeJesus and Jasmin Avellenada for the Lady Bulldogs. Watch the meet You Tube

The 2-AA Region Cross Country meet was held Tuesday Oct. 30, 2012 at East Georgia State College in Swainsboro. It was a very windy and chilly day. Team results:

Gilbert Zamorano and Julie Cobos were the top two finishers for Toombs County high School in a cross country meet at Vidalia High. Gilbert, who ran his first mile in 5:20, led the 3.1 mile race early on and placed seventh overall at the finish line in 19:40. His brother, Alex, paced off him and was eighth in 19:54. Fernando Rodriquez finished 12th in 20:02, Efrain Zamarano 19th, Travis Morales 21st, Tim Bowen 24th, Chris Sanders 31st, Akim Toby 46th and Jerry Zamarano 48th.

Julie, who also surged to an early lead, settled in third place behind two West Laurens runner and she finished third in 23:51. Samantha Houston was the second TCHS runner to cross the finish line and she placed fourth overall in 24:56. Laura Guerrero was 15th in 26:55, Blanca Molina 24th, Heather Villegas 26th, Cheyenne Reeves 29th, Ashley Cruz 36th, Maribel Hernandez 38th and Jordan Coonce 39th.

The Toombs County Boys finished second behind West Laurens. Vidalia was third, Bryan County fourth, East Laurens fifth and Montgomery County sixth.

The Lady Bulldogs finished third, nine points behind second place Bryan County. West Laurens was first, Vidalia fourth and Appling County fifth.

The Toombs County High School cross country teams battled a tough 3.1 mile course at Vidalia High and the Lady Bulldogs finished second and the Bulldogs third. South Georgia power Bleckley County won both divisions. The competitors ran around the school and the athletic fields before disappearing into the woods. The race ended with a lap around the track and then an uphill run by the field house. Watch highlights and interviews You Tube

Toombs County's Samantha Houston was the first non-Bleckley female runner to cross the finish line. She placed eighth in 24:25. Julie Cobos was 10th in 25:48, Blanca Molina 11th in 25:53, Laura Guerrero 17th in 28:09 and Klarissa Castillo 18th in 28:13. Jordan Coonce and Ashley Cruz also finished the race.   

The top Bulldog was Gilbert Zamorano, who placed 12th in 20:28. Alex Zamorano was 18th in 20:41, Travis Morales 24th in 21:45, Chris Sanders 41st in 23:05, Tim Bowen 42nd in 23:22, Efrin Zamorano 43rd in 23:22. Jerry Zamorano, Isiah Givens and Shamonte Franklin also finished the race.

Samantha Houston and Jazmine Avallaneda both were Toombs County winners in cross country races run in Lyons. Houston won the girls high school 3.1 mile race in 26:14 and finishing behind her in second place was teammate Julie Cobos in 26:28. Avallaneda won the girls middle school two-mile race and JamieVillegas finished second in the middle school boys race.

In the boys high school race Gilbert Zamorano placed second in 20:01 and Alex Zamorano fourth in 20:41. The Toombs County Lady Bulldogs finished first and the Bulldogs second. The Toombs County Running Dogs are off to a strong start, finishing 1st overall in the region for both teams! The girls for the first time ever, competed and took 1st place overall out of 8 teams and the boys placed 2nd overall behind Tattnall Co. HS!
The teams participating in the 5k run were: Bryan Co., Long Co., Claxton, Liberty Co., Southeast Bulloch, Vidalia, and Tattnall. The course at Tattnall Co. High School was soggy,  hot and humid so the times are slower than usual, but out of 65 runners Samantha Houston placed 2nd with a time of 26:12, Julie Cobos placed 4th with a time of 27:40, Laura Guerrero placed 11th with a time of  29:50, Klarissa Castillo placed 18th with a time of 31:40, Heather Villegas placed 25th with a time of  34:48, Blanca Molina placed 26th with a time of 34:50, Elsa Mares placed 32nd with a time of 36:46, Cheyenne Reeves placed 33rd with a time of 37:19, Maribel Hernandez placed 50th with a time of 42:13 and Jordan Coonce placed 51st with a time of 42:30.

TCHS Cross County- The Boys and Girls teams opened up the season with a two-mile race at Bleckley County. Fernando Rodriguez finished 20th out of 201 runners and Samantha Houston 18th out of 153. Jazmine Avellaneda, an eighth grader, placed 13th and earned a medal too. In the region both teams placed first. The boys finished fifth overall out of 16 teams, and the girls seventh out of nine teams.

Toombs County High School senior Jalisha Knight ended her Lady Bulldog days with a bang and two major accomplishments. She won two more state titles at the GHSA Girls State Track Meet in Albany and she set her first state record. Knight won the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdle races, giving her four state titles, and she set a GHSA Double A State Track Meet record in the 100 hurdles by winning the race in 14.16 seconds- .17 better than the state mark. Knight won her 300 meter title by over a second over another Decatur runner. Jalisha ran a personal record 44.11 and defeated Ashleigh Rasheed, who finished the race in 45.32. Knight received 10 team points for each victory propelling TCHS to a tenth pace finish in Double A.

Jalisha won a state championship in the 300 meter hurdle race as a sophomore and the 100 meter hurdles as a junior. In her first state meet, as a freshman, she placed fourth.

Toombs County High School  senior runner Jalisha Knight qualified for the finals in the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles at the GHSA Girls State Track meet in Albany. Knight won her heat in the 100 in her fastest time ever. Jalisha's 14.33 was just a tenth of a second off tying the GHSA Double State Track Meet record of 14.23. She tied her personal record in the 300 meter hurdles by winning her heat in 44.95. Jalisha will be in lane four in both of her finals on Saturday. Freshman Samantha Houston finished 15th in the finals of the 2-mile race in 13:26.

Toombs County High School track athletes Jalisha Knight, Samantha Houston and Daniel Avellenada survived the new sectionals competition and qualified for the GHSA State Track Meet. The girls will compete in Albany on May 3, 4 and 5. and the boys in Jefferson on May 10,11 and 12. TCHS competed, on Saturday, in the East Sectional at Lamar County High School in Barnesville. The competition was from Regions 3,4 and 8 and the top eight from each event qualified for state. Watch slideshow

Knight, a senior and two-time state champ, did well her specialty- the hurdles. Jalisha won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.49 seconds. Jalisha won the state championship in the 100 meter hurdles last year in 14.78. Knight won her heat in the 300 meter hurdles in 46.68. She finished second overall behind Rabun County's Sally Woerner, who ran 46.68. Knight claimed the state title in the 300 meter hurdles, in 2010, in 45.48.

Jalisha's goal at state is to win the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and medal in the long jump and that wish is still possible. Knight qualified for state on her first jump with a leap of 18 feet, 5 1/2 inches.  

Houston, who qualified for the GHSA State Crosss Country meet as a freshman back in November, also is going to state in track in her rookie season. In her first race she ran the 1600 meters in a personal record of 5:57 placing sixth and then at six o'clock she came back and finished eighth in the 3200 meter race in 14:33 despite suffering from stomach cramps. So, she will be running in both events at Albany.

Daniel Avellenada ran a personal record 4:45 in the mile and the senior, running track for the first time, finished sixth to pull off the same feat as Houston- qualifying for both the cross country and track state championships. Johnathan Reyes failed to qualify in the 3200 in a time of 12:17.33. Deonte Dasher finished twelfth in the 800 meters. The girls 4x100 meter relay team of Keke Jones, Jalisha Knight, Diamond Boyd, Deavia Howard and Shaila Bacon also failed to qualify for state.

Jalisha repeats as top Region 2 track athlete

For the second straight year Jalisha Knight, Toombs County's two-time state champ, was the top female point scorer at the Region 2 Track meet at Georgia Southern. Knight won the long jump (17 feet, 8 inches) and the 100 (14.8) and 300 (46.28) meter hurdles and accumulated 32.25 total points. Jalisha also qualified for the state sectionals at Lamar County on Saturday, April 28 in the 4 x 100 meter hurdle race.  

Joining Knight in Barnesville will be  Deonte Dasher-800M (2:15.19), Kelo Bagley-100M (11.3), Jonathan Reyes- two-mile (12:17), Daniel Avellaneda- one-mile (4:58), Girl’s 4 x100 Relay (Keke Jones, Jalisha Knight, Diamond Boyd, Deavia Howard, Shaila Bacon) (53.17), Samantha Houston- two-mile (14:38) and one-mile (6:13.06), Laneisha Furman-Shot put (29-5.5).

These athletes must place in the top eight at sectionals to advance to the state track meet. The girl's state meet is in Albany on May 3-5. The boy's state meet is in Jefferson May 10-12.

The Toombs County boys and girls track teams are scoring more points than they have in recent seasons due to more quality participation. In a meet in Vidalia, versus VHS and Dodge County, TCHS winners included two-time state champ Jalisha Knight in the 100 meter hurdles, Deavia Howard in the 200 meters and Samantha Houston in the one and two mile runs. Monday March 19th at VHS. Toombs placed 2nd overall both teams. Teams competing were Vidalia, Toombs and Dodge.

2011 Cross Country Season

Avellenada finishes 14th at state

For the second straight year Toombs County's Daniel Avellenada was the second South Georgia runner to cross the finish line at the Double A State Cross Country Championship in Carrollton. Daniel, a senior, not only improved his time by 29 seconds, but he also bettered his finish by 14 places. Avellenada placed 14th in a time of 17:27.43. The Bulldogs, the Region 2 champs, were the second best South Georgia team, behind Thomasville, and finished 12th overall. Chris Quintero finished 82nd in 18:56, Esgar Maldonado was 94th in 19:12, Fernando Rodriguez placed 99th in 19:19 and Rene Tinoco 112th in 19:37.

Samantha Houston and Kristen Flowers finished within a second of each other. Houston, a freshman, ran the 3.1 mile course in in 25:30 and Flowers, a senior in 25:31.

In other running news Toombs County athletic trainer Mary Bennett and Cynthia Williamson each completed a half marathon in Savannah. Mary ran the 13.1 mile course in 2:45.00 and said, "It was awesome." Volleyball and tennis coach Tom Brodnax finished the 26.2 mile marathon course in 4:57:34. Brodnax was running to raise money for the volleyball team. Toombs Now owes him 26 dollars. 

Cross country Bulldogs are Region 2 champs


The Tattnall County Battle Creek Warriors have been a serious rival for the Toombs County Boys cross country team. The Dawgs haven't been able to beat them until it really counted. Five Toombs County runners placed in the top 10 and all ran the three mile course, at the Children's Baptist Home in Appling County, in less than 19 minutes enabling the Bulldogs to win the Region 2 championship by 13 points over the Warriors. TCHS will compete at state on Saturday, November 5 in Carrollton.

Senior Daniel Avellaneda, who keeps lowering his times, ran a personal best 17:06 and finished second. Last year he ran the same flat course in 17:30 and won the individual region title. Daniel said, "Instead of coming in first I would rather win the whole thing as a team." Esgar Maldonado, the Vidalia Onion Run 10K champ, finished fifth overall in 18:24, Chris Quintero was sixth in 18:36, Rafael Florez seventh in 18:37 and Rene Tinoco eighth in 18:47.

The Toombs County girls also qualified for state with a fourth place finish. The top Lady Bulldog was freshman Samantha Houston, who also keeps lowering her times. Samantha placed fourth in 22:37- a new personal record. Senior Kristen Flowers was seventh in 24:14, Bailey Bryson 21st in 26:15, Julie Sheppard 27th in 28:40 and Heather Villegas 28th in 28:43.

Georgia’s STATE Middle School Cross Country Championships at Bleckley Co.

The TCMS running pups competed in the JV MS 2 mile race. The boys raced at 9 am and the girls followed at 9:30am. It was the first time our teams have competed in 42 degree temperatures this season. It was chilly! The boy’s team placed 11th out of 20 teams, and the girl’s team placed 13th out of 15.

Jarrett Jackson placed 8th out of 184 runners in the MS JV race, winning a medal of honor, with a time of 13:35. Tristan Lynn finished 3th with a time of 15:01. Gage Clark finished 77th with a time of 15:17. Nathan Belch finished 138th with a time of 17:00. Isaiah Givens finished 177th with a time of 19:26.55 and Allyn Harris finished 178th with a time of 19:26.92. In the MS region JV race, Bleckley Co. MS finished 1st, TCMS 11th, West Laurens placed 12th overall, and Dodge placed 20th.

TCHS Running Dawgs competed in Swainsboro against Swainsboro, Jefferson Co., Jenkins Co., Johnson Co., East Laurens and Vidalia. 40 girls and 67 boys competed Thursday.

The girls had a team for the first time this season. The girls placed 3rd  (Score 70) behind Swainsboro (Score 38) and Jenkins (Score 51). Freshman Samantha Houston feeling much better, won the race with a time of 23:27. Senior Kristen Flowers placed 3rd with a time of 24:30, Freshman Bailey Bryson placed 17th with a time of 28:30, Freshman Klarissa Castillo placed 19th with a time of 28:39, Junior Heather Villegas placed 30th with a time of 31:41, Freshman Julie Shepard placed 31st with a time of 31:50, and Freshman Brittany Floyd placed 32nd with a time of 31:57.

The boys won!!!  The Running Dawgs placed 1st with a team score of 27, followed by Swainsboro (74), Jenkins Co. (85), Jefferson Co. (105), East Laurens (115), Vidalia (147), and Johnson Co. (210).

Sophomore Chris Quintero placed 5th with a time of 18:19, Senior Esgar Maldonado placed 6th with a time of 18:29, Freshman Rafael Florez placed 7th with a  time of 19:15, Freshman Fernando Rodriguez placed 8th with a time of 19:24, Senior Dakota Higgs placed 12th with a time of 20:00, Freshman Travis Morales placed 14th with a time of 20:18, Freshman Brandon Rosales placed 29th with a time of 21:42, and Sophomore Jamie Cruz placed 50th with a time of 24:02

Toombs County MS and HS participated in the Bleckley Co. Invitational.

The Middle School girl Pups ran the tough Bleckley Co. course for the first time this season.  Leading the girl’s team is Jazmine Avellaneda placing 18th with a time of 15:26. She received medal of honor for finishing in the top 25 girls. Danadia Fulsom placed 58th with a time of 17:35, Deda Colemenares placed 61st with a time of 17:46, Ashley Houston placed 96th with a time of 20:22, Stephanie Pittman placed 110th with a time of 22:44, Kayleigh Holmes placed 124th with a time of 23:53 and Amy Perez placed 125th with a time of 23:56.

TCHS ran strong. Daniel Avellaneda was in 2nd place for over 3miles and was passed by five steps at the finish line to place 5th with a time of 17:46. This was his best racing time (PR) this season. He finished 2 places behind Irvin Melo from Tattnall. As race fans know the rival between these two competitors remains fierce. Daniel received a medal of honor. Senior Dakota Higgs placed 95th with a time of 20:42. He is running stronger than ever. Sophomore, Travis Morales, placed 112th with a time of 21:11, and Sophomore Jamie Cruz placed 225th with a time of 28:45.  For the girls, Senior Kristen Flowers place 37th with a time of 24:54 and Freshman Samantha Houston coming off the stomach flu placed 40th with a time of 25:22. 

Toombs Co. Running Bulldogs Compete at the Mercer University Runfit Sports Invitational
On Saturday Sept. 17th, the running Dogs competed at the Mercer Invitational. Collegiate men and women ran, as will as and GHSA and GISA Girls and Boys teams. The Toombs Co. boys team placed 11th out of 15 teams ahead of East Laurens, Calvary Day School, and Dodge Co. The Dogs #1 runner Daniel Avellaneda finished in the top 25 out of 132 boys competing. He placed 24th with a time of 18:30. Fernando Rodriguez placed 64th with a time of  19:51, Travis Morales placed 70th with a time of  20:07, Chris Quintero placed 71st with a time of 20:09 and Dakota Higgs placed 86th with a time of 20:50.
The girls did not have enough runners to have a team score, but freshman Samantha Houston finished 29th overall out of 113 competitors with a time of 22:59. Kristen Flowers finished 50th with a time of 25:05, Heather Villegas finished 99th with a time of 32:07 and Brittany Floyd finished 101st with a time of 32:22.
The running Dogs competed at Tattnall County High School against Tattnall, Pierce, Bryan, Vidalia, and Liberty. The boy's  team finished 3rd behind Tattnall and Pierce Co. Top runners for the Dogs were: Danial Avellaneda (18:27) and Samantha Houston (26:40) finishing 2nd. The girls did not have enough participants to have a team score.
The Cross Country team competed Tuesday in Claxton against Claxton HS, Jenkins HS, and Metter HS. The boy's team finished in 1st place! Senior Daniel Avellaneda set a PR running the 5K in 17:27. Rene Tinoco placed 4th(18:33), Chris Quintero placed 5th (19:04), Esgar Maldonado placed 6th (19:04), Fernando Rodriguez placed 8th(20:13), Brandon Rosales placed 10th (20:33), Travis Carter Morales placed 11th (20:43), Dre Mayweather placed 15th(21:19) and Dakota Higgs placed 19th(22:04). Freshman, Samantha Houston won the race for the girls with a time of 24:16, and Senior Kristen Flowers took 2nd place runnning the 5K in 24:38.

Toombs County's Jalisha Knight is a state champion one again. On Saturday afternoon, in Albany, she added the 100 meter hurdles title to the 300 meter hurdles championship which she won in 2010. Jalisha was the only Double A girl to run under 15 seconds. Knight's 14.780 beat second place Nancy Price, of Screven County by .670 seconds. In her qualifying heat Knight beat Price by .660. Jalisha said she had to make up for a slow start, "My foot slipped before I even started and they all went ahead, however, once I saw that girl's foot right beside me I took off and won by a hurdle and a half." Knight finished second in state in the 300 meters. Sandrika Simmons, of Therrell, won the race in 43.910 and defeated Jalisha by a little less than a second. Knight ran a 44.950, her personal best in this event. Knight said, "When I was going over the third hurdle I messed up the whole jump, so that slowed me down and then when we were going over the seventh hurdle my body shut down." Thanks to Jalisha's performance Toombs County placed 10th in Double A.

Knight and Johnson are going to state

Toombs County High School's Jalisha Knight and Shikell Johsnon have both earned trips to the state track after qualifying at the Region 2 Track Meet at Georgia Southern. Knight, a 2010 state champ in the 300 meter hurdles, was the Region 2AA High Point Female athlete. She qualified in three different events. Knight dominated the 100 meter hurdles. She qualified in 15.06 seconds and won by three seconds in a time of 14.78. In the 300 meter hurdles the junior qualified at 45.48 (tying her time in the 2010 state final) and won by 4 1/2 seconds in 46.24. Jalisha won the long jump by exactly six inches with a leap of 16 feet, eight and three quarter inches. 

Johnson placed second in the discus to earn his first trip to state. Shikell threw the circular disc 121 feet and three inches. Malcom Burley came up an inch and a half short of earning a trip to Jefferson. The senior finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet, three inches. Tomon Hampton was fourth in the shot put with a best throw of 44 feet, eight inches. Both the Toombs County Boys and Girls finished sixth in Region 2. 

Knight will be competing in Albany, at the GHSA State Track Meet, on May 12-14. On Thursday, the 12th, she will qualify for finals in the 100 meter hurdles (5:30 p.m.) and 300 meter hurdles (7:10 p.m.).  On Friday at noon she has finals in the long jump. If she qualifies Thursday in the top eight, she runs again in the finals on Saturday in the 100 at 2:10 p.m. and in the 300 at 3:40 p.m. Johnson will throw the discus on May 5 at noon.

The Toombs County track teams dueled Vidalia and Wheeler County at Vidalia on Thursday and 2010 GHSA State Champ Jalisha Knight won the 100 meter, high hurdles, 300 meter hurdles and helped lead the Lady Bulldogs 4x400 team to a victory. 2010 Cross Country Season

Avellenada is 2nd South Georgian at state meet

Toombs County's Daniel Avellenada was the second South Georgia runner to cross the finish line in the Double A race at the GHSA State Cross Country Meet in Carrollton. Daniel ran the 5K (3.1 mile) race in 17:56.98 and placed 28th overall. His time was just five seconds behind Bleckley County's Chase McCulley, who in his 26th place finish was the first South Georgian to complete the race. Daniel also beat Irving Melo, his rival from Tattnall County, by two positions and eight seconds.

Esgar Maldonada was the second TCHS runner to finish the race in 19:19 and he was 80th overall. Dakota Higgs was 119th in 19:56, Tim Bowen 156th in 20:57, Tony Guerrero 168th in 21:21, Alex Zamarano 174th in 21:26 and Johnathan Reyes 204th in 23:57. The Toombs County Boys were 17th overall with an average time of 19:54.

The Lady Bulldogs top finisher was Kristen Flowers who placed 105th in 25:07. First year runner Christina Zamarano was was 112th in 24;34, Kristen Cook 148th in 28:05, Danielle Avellenada 150th in in28:32, Heather Villegas 169th in 30:31, 30:31, Molly Quarterman 170th in 30:32 and Claudia Zamarano finished 33:55. The Lady Bulldogs finished 22nd.

TCHS runners are going to state 

On Monday October 25th the TCHS Cross Country team ran in the Region 2AA meet at the Georgia Children's Baptist Home in Appling County. The teams participating in this years region 5K run were: Appling, Brantley, Long, McIntosh, Pierce, St. Vincent (girls team only), Tattnall, Toombs, and Vidalia. The top four teams in the region advance to the State Cross Country meet on Saturday, November 6th in Carrollton, Georgia.
The Toombs County Boys battled it out with Tattnall County. All season long, junior Daniel Avellenada had been placing behind Tattnall's top runner, however when it counted, Daniel prevailed and won the Region 2-AA Championship with a time of 17:40. This tremendous effort resulted in the boys' team finishing as the region runner-up. Junior Esgar Maldonado placed 4th in 18:25, senior Cole Lynn 9th at 18:48, junior Dakota Higgs was16th in 19:38, sophomore Alex Zamorano ended up 19th at 20:11, junior Ross Castro 28th in 20:38 and senior Tony Guerrero was 33rd in 20:49. Region 2-AA Boys' results: 1st-Tattnall with 38 points, 2nd Toombs with 51 points, 3rd-Pierce with 91 points and 4th-Vidalia with 112 points.
The Toombs County Girls' team ran a great race! Junior Kristen Flowers was 7th place in a time of 23:56, Senior Tina Zamorano 10th in 25:25, senior Kristin Cook 13th in 26:11, senior Danielle Avellenada 22nd in 28:29, sophomore Heather Villegas 24th in 28:33, and junior Claudia Zamorano (running on an injured knee) 35th in 31:42 and junior Georgia Jernigan did not finish due to an allergic reaction to fire ant bites. Region 2-AA Girls results: 1st- St. Vincent's with 22 points, 2nd-Pierce with 74 points, 3rd-Toombs 76 points and 4th-Vidalia 89 points.

TCMS Runners Excel in Region and State Cross Country

On Tuesday, October 12, the Toombs County Middle School cross country team
participated in the Region run at Bleckley County.  Both the boys and
girls teams did very well.  The runners for the TCMS girls team were
Samantha Houston, Lacie Leggett, Danielle Plante, Danadia Fulsom, Jasmine
Allevenada, and Cassie Reese. The runners for the TCMS boys team were
Gilbert Zamorano, Fernando Sanchez, Rafael Florez, Brannon Braddock, Nathan
Belch, Gonza Blount, and Justin Hall. Both teams placed 4th in the region
with individual runners receiving medals for finishing in the top 20. These
Runners for the girls team were Samantha Houston 3rdand Lacie Leggett 17th. The runners in the t
op 20 for the boys team were Gilbert Zamorano
1st, Rafael Florez 3rd, and Fernando Sanchez 7th.

On Saturday, October 23, the TCMS Cross Country team competed in the State
run in Bleckley County. The girls ran in the girlsJV run at 9:30 and
the Boys ran in the Boys Small School ran at 11:00. All Competitors
received medals for placing in the top 25 at the race.  For the girls€™
team the two runners were Samantha Houston, who came in 1st in the race,
and Lacie Leggett, who finished 12th.  In the boys race there were three
TCMS competitors; Gilbert Zamorano, who placed 6th, Rafael Florez, who
placed 16th, and Fernando Sanchez, who placed 19th.

The rest of the team placed: 22nd Maranda Steele with a time of 30:24. 24th Danielle Avellenada with a time of 30:31 and 31st  Kellie Dykes with a time of 34:32.

Monday Oct. 25th the Toombs Co. Cross Country Team will compete in Region for a chance to go to STATE. Go DAWGS!

Toombs County High School sophomore Jalisha Knight finished first in the 300 meter low hurdles race a the GHSA State Track Meet in Albany earning her the Double A State Championshp in her second try. Knight ran a personal best time of 45.480 and won the race by a half a second over Charlton County's Jadquay Dasher. Knight won her heat in the semifinals in a time of 46.230. Last year Jalisha finished fourth in 100 meter hurdles. She qualified for state in that event this year but did not make it to the finals. Y-101 Story

Toombs County High School's Jalisha Knight is the Region 3B champ in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. The sophomore set school records in winning both events. In her specialty, the 100 meter hurdles, she ran a personal record time of 14.43. That time would have won the 2A State Meet last season. Knight finished fourth in her first trip to state in a time of 15:08. Jalisha won the 300 meter hurdle race in 46.61. The winning time in that event at state last year was 45.890. Video Joining Knight at state, May 6th through 8th, is Jessica King, who finished second in the region meet in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet and nine inches.
Kristen Flowers finished fifth in the 3200 meter run with a personal record of 14:43. Keke Jones placed fourth in the 400 meters with a  personal best time of of 1:01 and eighth in the 200 meters. The Lady Bulldogs finished sixth in the region.

2009 Cross Country Season

Congratulations to the Boys and Girls Cross Country team who participated in the STATE meet Saturday Nov. 7th in Carrollton, Georgia. It was a beautiful,cool day to run in Northwest Georgia. The Toombs County Runnin' Bulldogs finished 15th and the Lady Bulldogs finished 17th in STATE! In region 3-AA, the boys finished 2nd, and the girls finished 3rd.
Out of a field of 221 boys, Esgar Maldonado finished 55th with a time of 18:44, Angel Colemaneres finished 76th with a time of 19:13, Daniel Avellenada finished 92nd with a time of 19:26, Dakota Higgs finished 111 with a time 19:57, Rene Tinoco finished 129th with a time of 20:15, Tony Guerrero placed 163rd with a time of 21:12, and Alex Zamorano who ran with a stomach virus placed 220th with a time of 31:12. Alex stopped 3 times to vomit, but did not quit the course. Wow!
Out of a field of 191 girls, Lisa Espino finished 67th with a time of 23:51, Kristen Flowers placed 68th with a tiem of 23:53, Kristin Cook placed 119th with a time of 26:32, Claudia Zamorano placed 122nd with a time of 26:41 and Georgia Jernigan who ran with a stress fractured toe placed 154th with a time of 28:42.

Lacie Leggett placed 21st with a time of 14:47, and received a medal of honor for placing in the top 25 runners in the state of Georgia.  Samantha Houston placed 35th with a time of 15:35. Ashlee Beverly placed 63rd with a time of 16:25. Bailey Bryson placed 85th with a time of 17:18. Danielle Plante placed 92nd with a time of 18:02 and Jinnia Jernigan placed 108th with a time of 19:53.

Toombs County MS boys won the STATE individual race. Gilbert Zamorano placed 7th with a time of 12:25. Brandon Rosales placed 10th with a time of 12:34, Rafael Flores placed 15th with a time of 12:57, Travis Carter-Morales placed 18th with a time of 13:13, Fernando Sanchez placed 22nd with a time of 13:16, and Ricardo Tinoco placed 25th with a time of 13:40. All of these boys received a medal of honor for placing in the tip 25 runners in the state of Georgia.  Efrain Quintero placed 27th with a time of 13:50 and Tommy Bryson placed 107th with a time of 17:04.

 In the rain, the boys cross country team ran hard and finished as the Region Runner-up!  The girl's placed 3rd overall. This advances both teams to STATE in Carrollton, Ga. on Nov. 7th! This is the 4th year in a row that both the girls and the boys Cross Country team have qualified for the State meet.

Kristin Flowers and Angel Colemaneres placed 3rd with a time of 23:42 and 19:30 respectively. Claudia Zamorano placed 4th, Kristin Cook placed 5th, Georgia Jernigan placed 8th, Melayna Denmark placed 9th, Corissa Whitfield placed 10th, Rayna Oliver placed 11th.  For the boy's: Dakota Higgs placed 5th, Alex Zamorano placed 6th, Tim Bowen placed 8th, Tony Guerrero placed 9th, Tyler Hadden 10th, Brandon Clark 12th, Pete Denmark 14th, Sergio Flores 17th, and Jamie Cabrera 20th.
Saturday, the Running Dawgs ran in the Mercer Run Fit Sports Invitational. The Lady Bulldog runner Kristen Flowers placed 60th out of a field of 131 female runners. The Boy's team placed 18th out of 23 teams and 2nd in the Region. Two hundred and ten male high school runners participated.  Esgar Maldonado placed 56th, Daniel Avellenada placed 57th, Pete Denmark placed 117th, Alex Zamorano placed 129th, Tim Bowen 137th, Tyler Hadden 152nd, Jamie Cabrera 153rd, Ross Castro 154th and Sergio Flores placed 206th.
Tuesday Sept. 29, 2009  the running Dawgs were at Claxton. The Middle School Boy's and Girl's teams placed 1st! The other MS teams which participated were: Vidalia and Appling Co.  The Bulllpup boys were led by Gilbert Zamorano coming in 1st, Fernando Sanchez 2nd, Brandon Rosales 3rd, Travis Morales 4th, Tommy Bryson 9th and Brannon Braddock with 12th place.  The MS girls were led by Samantha Houston 1st, Lacie Leggett 2nd, Ashley Clark 4th, Ashlee Beverly 6th, Bailey Bryson 10th, Ansley Tatum 11th, Danielle Plante th, Jinnia Jernigan 15th and Jade Jernigan with 20th place.

The boys placed 2nd overall falling to Vidalia by 5 points. SEB was 3rd, Claxton was 4th and Appling 5th. Although the Bulldogs were 2nd, Esgar Maldonado placed 1st with a time of 17:29,  and Daniel Avellenanda placed 3rd with a time of 17:42, Tim Bowen placed 12th, Dakota Higgs placed 14th, Tony Guerro placed 15th, Tyler Hadden placed 18th, Alex Zamorano placed 21st, and Sergio Flores placed 43rd.
The Bulldogs' # 3 runner Senior Pete Denmark went down on the final 1/2 mile of his race injuring his foot, but that would not stop Pete! He was determined to finish his race. As he hobbled horribly in pain, his other Dawg teammates encouraged him to continue. Pete completed his race with his Bulldog Teammates cheering him on, chanting, "Pete, Pete, Pete." He finished his race in 48th place, but the outcome of the race was not important today. Today his teammates would not leave their fallen Bulldog. The entire team rallied around Pete and walked/jogged with him to the finish line. It is a moment idelibly etched in history. Even though the Bulldogs were 2nd, it did not matter, today's lesson was a life long lesson: team spirit, determination, perserverance... and to know that when things get tough, to fight through to the end, your "teammates" won't leave you, and you can finish the race that has been set before you. 
The CC team ran Thursday at West Laurens. The boy's finished in 1st place! Way to go DAWGS! Burke Co. was 2nd, Dublin was 3rd, W. Laurens was 4th, Dodge was 5th and E.Laurens was 6th. The boy's team placed 3rd overall with 74 points. Esgar Maldonado placed 1st with a time of 18:01, Daniel Avellenada placed 4th with a time of 18:12 and Dakota Higgs placed 18th with a time of 19:48.  Tattnall was 1st with 51 points, Vidalia was 2nd with 67 points, Jenkins was 4th wtih 78 points , Claxton was 5th wtih 81 points and Montgomery Co. was 6th with 214 points.
 The Lady Bulldogs took 1st-3rd places.  1st place Lisa Espino with a time of 23:20, 2nd place  Kristen Flowers with a time of 23:30 and 3rd place Claudia Zamorano with a time of 23:57. 
At the 2nd Bleckley Co. Cross Country Classic the MS and HS teams ran a 2 mile race.The Toombs County MS girl's placed 2nd overall. The MS boy's placed 3rd overall with several boy's receiving medals for finishing in the top 25.

The HS boy's placed 3rd in our region with Esgar Maldonado placing 10th and Daniel Avellenada placing 17th out of 147 boys. Both boys received a medal of honor for placing in the top 25.  Kristen Flowers placed 21st and Claudia Zamorano placed 23rd out of 90 girls. They both received medals of honor.
On Thursday Sept. 10 the HS running Dawgs ran at Swainsboro.  Both teams placed 1st ahead of Swainsboro, Metter and East Laurens. Esgar Maldonado and Daniel Avellenada lead the boy's team running their race in 19:16 and 19:30 respectively.  Senior- Lisa Espino, Sophomore- Claudia Zamorano and Kristen Flowers lead the girls team.

Knight finishes fourth at state


In her first trip to the GHSA State Track Meet in Albany Toombs County's Jalisha Knight finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles. Knight ran a career best 15.080 and she was just .02 seconds out of second place. Laconia Davis. from Rockmart placed second with a 15.060 and Jalisha's big rival, Annie Fletcher of Bleckley County, was third in 15.070. Westminster's Miray Seward won the event in a time of 14.730. Congratulations to the TCHS Cross Country team! On Saturday November 8th the Dogs ran at the STATE cross country meet in Carrollton, Georgia.  Both teams placed 2nd in Region 3AA competition. The boy's team placed 22nd in STATE out of 32 teams and the girl's team placed 12th in STATE out of 27 teams.

Congratulations to the TCMS running DAWGS who participated in the MS STATE CC race Saturday in Bleckley Co. The girls and boys ran the Championship race.  The girls also participated in the JV Championship race.
The TCMS girls placed 21st in the state of GA out of 23 teams and placed 2nd in our Region! The girls who participated in the Championship Race were: Bailey Brison placed 137th with a  time of 16:42, Samantha Houston placed 138th with a  time of 16:47, Desiree Parker placed 145th with a  time  of 17:10, Heather Villegas placed 150th with a time of 17:34 and Lauren Mayes placed 166 with a time of 19:52.

This has been a busy week for the Toombs County Cross Country teams with trips to Macon on Saturday, Dublin on Tuesday and Swainsboro on Thursday. Lisa Espino was the top finisher for the Lady Bulldogs placing third at Dublin and earlier in the season she was the winner in a race at Tattnall County. Christasia Jones, a first year runner, led the middle school team at Dublin with an eighth place finish.  Y-101 Story

Cross County season comes to an end at the State Meet in Carrollton 

The Toombs Co. County Bulldogs ran exceptionally well at STATE Saturday.  There are 8 AA regions with 4 teams plus individuals who qualify.  Each region is allowed to run 7 individuals, therefore over 214 boys and 214 girls competed.  Toombs Co. boys finished 22nd out of 30+ teams and Toombs Co. girls finished 14th out of 30+ teams.
The seven runners for the Bulldogs were: Bobby Mincey placed 59th with a time of 18:38; Francisco Depaz placed 130th with a time of 20:19; Jeremy Craft placed 132 with a time of 20:21; Jerome Johnson placed 147th with a time of 20:33; Patrick Craft placed 151st with a time of 20:36; Rashond Baker placed 158th with a time of  20:27 and Ric Stewart finished 164th with a time of 21:15.
The seven runners for the Lady Bulldogs were: Linda Esparza placed 58th with a time of 22:58; Lisa Espino placed 78th with a time of 23:56; Lindsay Weaver placed 122nd with a time of 26:01; Kristen Cook placed 139th with a time of 27:06;  Celina Castro placed 141st with a time of 27:08; Andi Ferree placed 142nd with a time of 27:13;and Vivian Hernandez placed 181st with a time of 30:02.

TCMS wraps up season

On Saturday Oct. 20, 2007 the Toombs Co. Bullpups ran in the 16th  Annual Bleckley Co. Invitational.  The top 4 teams overall received trophies, and the top 25 individuals received metals.  The Bullpup Boys were 3rd overall out of 19 teams, and received a trophy.  Dakota Higgs and Ross Castro received metals of honor for placing 10th and 11th respectively.  The Lady Bullpups placed 7th overall out of 18 teams.

On Saturday Oct. 27, 2007 the Bullpups participated in the 2nd Annual Open STATE Cross Country Meet in Bleckley Co.  There was a Championship race for the girls and the boys. In addition, a JV race was run for girls and boys.  The top 5 for Toombs Co. ran in the Championship races.  These were:  Jeremy Beasley, Ross Castro, Manuel Hernandez, Dakota Higgs and Ethan Reddish for the boys.  The girls top 5 were: Melayna Denmark, Georgia Jernigan, Jalisha Knight, Rayna Oliver,  and  Janine Taylor.  The boys placed 14th in the top 20 teams who participated. Ross Castro placed 19th overall with a time of 12:26 with 193 runners participating, and received a metal.  The girls placed 17th out of the top 20 teams with 190 girls participating. In the JV girls race, Paula Dell, Katie Hayes, Jade Jernigan, Jazmine Moore, Desiree Parker and Heather Villegas ran. Three girls received metals for placing in the top 25.  These are: Katie Hayes 17th, Heather Villegas 18th and Desiree Parker 21st.  Way to go Bullpups!  We are so proud of you!

Congratulations to the TCMS Cross Country team which ran at the REGION meet in Bleckley Co. on Tuesday October 16th.  The Lady Bullpups are your 2007 Region Runner-up! They placed 2nd in Region 4AA, and the Bullpups placed 3rd.  What an awesome accomplishment for our up coming BULLDOGS!

Middle School Boy's placed 3rd overall. The Lady Bulldogs placed 5th out of 15 teams and the Bulldogs placed 4th out of 15 teams. Toombs County Boys and Girls finish first  

On Thursday Sept. 28, 2007 the Toombs County Bullpups and Bulldogs ran in Vidalia. All four teams ran with one goal in mind: STATE. The High School results: Toombs Co. Boy's placed 1st, Tattnall 2nd, Vidalia 3rd, Dodge 4th, Montgomery Co. 5th, SE Bulloch 6th and Appling Co. 7th. Toombs Co. Girl's placed 1st, Appling Co. 2nd, SE Bulloch 3rd, Dodge Co. 4th and Vidalia 5th. The top 5 Bulldog finishers and times are: Bobby Mincey 1st place time 17:37, Jeremy Craft 3rd place, time 18:43, Francisco Depaz 4th place, time 18:59, and Ric Stewart 11th place time 19:41. The Lady Bulldog top 5 finisher and times are: Linda Esparza 2nd place, time 22:02, Lisa Espino 5th place time 23:14, Michelle Johnson 9th place, time 25:10, Kristen Cook 12th place, time 26:05 and Lindsay Weaver 18th place, time 27:57.
