Lady Crusaders realize their dream

The Robert Toombs Christian Academy Lady Crusaders had to play four games in 10 hours to make their dream of winning a state championship a reality. Senior pitcher Morgan Calhoun pitched 26 of the 28 innings that the Lady Crusaders played and in the game that decided the title, Calhoun pitched all seven innings. The first six were scoreless, but in the bottom of the seventh inning, leading 2-0, Crisp Academy put two runners on and scored a run on an error to cut the margin to one run. Calhoun ended the game catching a pop up to secure RTCA's second softball state championship with a 2-1 victory.

The Lady Crusaders scored their two runs in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Hannah Dees reached on a bunt single, Calhoun reached on an error, Alex Stanley hit a grounder that put runners on second and third and then catcher Jenna Delk singled to left center field to drive in both runners.

Hannah Dees annoys CCA in RTCA win

As the leadoff hitter for the Robert Toombs Crusaders, Hannah Dees is one annoying batter, if you are the opposition. In a 12-0 five inning home win over CCA, Dees went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and a RBI. She also stole second, third and even home on a walk in the first innning. Listen to some Y-101 Radio highlights of Dees in action followed by an on-air interview with the left-handed shortstop. Audio  Morgan Calhoun struck out 11 and allowed two base hits in improving her record to 15-5. In her last four games Calhoun has pitched 26 innings and struck out 55 batters while allowing only nine hits.

  RTCA's Calhoun strikes out a career-high 17

Robert Toombs senior pitcher Morgan Calhoun routinely strikes out 10 or more in games that she pitches. However, on September 18 Calhoun had a career-high 17 strike outs in an 8-1 home win over David Emanuel. Calhoun struck out at least two batters in all seven innings and she whiffed three in three innings. Listen to Y-101's coverage of the seventh inning in which Morgan struck out two and then a postgame interview with her.  Video

 Lady Crusaders beat Edmund Burke

Robert Toombs has been a busy team since the start of the season. The Lady Crusaders have already played 14 games in less than two weeks. On Friday and Saturday the team played six games, including four on Saturday and Morgan Calhoun pitched in all six of those. On Monday, on one days rest, Morgan pitched RTCA to a 6-2 win over Edmund Burke. Calhoun pitched 5 1/3 and allowed three hits and no runs and she struck out six batters. Calhoun started the game and pitched the first three innings. She returned to the mound in the fifth and the sixth. Morgan and Hannah Dees each had two hits for the 9-5 Lady Crusaders.
