Soccer Dawgs join the Elite 8

For the third time, in seven seasons, the Toombs County Boys soccer team is in the Elite 8 in Double A. The Bulldogs won their second straight road playoff game (beat undefeated Westside, Augusta 3-2 in the first round) 5-1 at Fitzgerald. TCHS will play at Westminster on Saturday.

The Bulldogs fell behind 1-0 in the first five minutes of the match and then they reeled off five straight goals. Goalie Tim Bowen said the defense did a good job, "The defense pushed them up and the offense broke out a few times and did what they should have done. In the first half we really didn't play as good as we should have. But, we picked it up in the second half."

Daniel Jauregui scored two first half goals, "First Fernando (Rodriquez) was going in to score a goal and I called out for him and he passed it back and I shot it in to the left corner of the goal. On the second one, it was a cross and the goalie got it out and I was on the ground and I slid for it. I actually didn't know I had scored the goal. I was just laying there because I thought I had missed it and my teammate Brandon (Rosales) came up to me and said I had scored. So, I got up happy and I was proud of myself." Gilbert Zamorano and Angel Colmanares also scored.

TCHS Soccer does it again

Julie Sheppard, Lauren Powell, Ansley Tatum and Katie Hayes

The Toombs County High School soccer teams both won on the road in the first round of the playoffs at Westside High in Augusta. Last year the Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs both won in the first round at Berrien. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Westside on penalty kicks 3-1 and the Bulldogs won their match 3-2.

The Lady Bulldogs and Westside played to a scoreless tie through regulation and overtime and then  they won 3-1 on penalty kicks. Ansley Tatum, Julie Sheppard and Lauren Powell each made a PK and Katie Hayes was the winning goal keeper.

Tatum booted in the first PK and then Powell struck hers, "Coach Cone told us to pick a spot and commit to it," said Lauren. "I picked the bottom right corner and I just put it in. It was impossible to save."

Sheppard blasted her penalty kick in to the bottom left corner and she also played well during regulation and overtime, "I just played great defense and just kept on pushing through."

Hayes made three saves on Westside's first four kicks. "The first one was really, really high. It pretty much hit the top of the crossbar. But, my hand was there. On the second one the girl kicked it toward the top, right corner and I jumped up and caught that one." Westside's third kick went in, but, not the fourth, "It was just a hard kick a little bit to the right and I got in front of it.'

The fourth seeded Bulldogs pulled off a big a feat giving number one seeded Westside it's first loss of the season, dropping the home team's record to 14-1-1. Gilbert Zamorano scored two TCHS goals. "On the first one Brandon (Rosales) passed it to me and I took it through one or two players and I hit it with the outside of my shoe and it went in the right corner," said Zamorano. "On the second goal we took a shot and it went over the keepers head and the defender was trying to hit it out. So, I stuck out my leg and it went in."

TCHS soccer teams rally for two state tourney wins

The lower seeded Toombs County High School soccer teams rallied for two comeback wins at Berrien County in the first round of the GHSA Double A State Tournament. The Bulldogs came back from a 2-0 first half deficit to win 3-2 while the Lady Bulldogs, who trailed 1-0 in the first half, won their match 3-1 in overtime on penalty kicks.

Madison Hart tied the girls game at 1-all, in the second half, with a goal that she hustled up. "The goalie had the ball and she dropped it," said Hart. "I outran everybody and got it. She (the goal keeper) tried to make a play on it, but I shot it over her head."

At the end of regulation the game was still tied at a goal a piece. The two teams played two five-minute overtime periods and then the game went to penalty kicks. The Lady Bulldogs booted two kicks in to the net. Claudia Zamorano blasted in the first goal. "It's a lot of pressure and when I went to kick it I looked at the right corner, but I wasn't really aiming at it," said Zamorano. "I looked at it so she would go that way and then I went left." Janine Taylor kicked the second PK, "I was an extremely luck person on that," said Taylor. "I was aiming toward the left, but the ball went to the high-90 and it ended up going in off her butt."

Berrien missed the net on one penalty kick and then Megan Meadows made three saves. "It was God's will and he worked through our team to win this game," said Meadows. "There is a reason that he sent us to the next round, we're suppose to be there and it was for Courtney (Wilkes) too, with Courtney in mind." Meadows said that she had to dive to make two of the saves and that she was trying to get a read on the kickers, "I was watching there eyes, their hips and their feet."

The Bulldogs had to overcome a 2-0 first half deficit to win their third game of the season. Gilbert Zamorano scored a first half goal and then one in the second to tied the game. "The first goal was a throw in and Angel Colmanares threw it and a guy hit it with his head and I stopped with my chest and kicked it," said Zamorano. "On the second one the ball came to half-field and I took it all the way down to the goalie and kicked it."

With six minutes remaining senior Ross Castro scored the game-winner on a short corner. "Alex Zamorano acted like he was going to take the shot and he faked it and I came in and took it and it felt great," said Castro, who moved from the defensive side of the field to score for the offense.

Morgan Burkett, a freshman playing her second season of soccer, scored the game-winner at East Laurens. "We were doing a corner kick and the ball just came over. I wasn't really expecting anything," said Burkett. "But, the ball just kind of bounced over everyone and two of the defenders missed it and I was like this is my chance. So, I kicked the ball and it just happened to go by the goalie. I was like so surprised and really thrilled."

In a 3-0 home victory over Coffee. Madison Lynn scored Toombs County's first goal and then Madison Hart booted in the second. Manny does it this time

Manny Hernandez (23) celebrates his two-goal game with Jonathan Hattaway (21), Christian Mills (8) and Ricardo Jackson (22)

Elite 8 bound 2011 Toombs County Bulldogs

How unlikely is it for a soccer team to win its first two state playoff games with goals scored in the final half minute of overtime? The Toombs County Bulldogs proved it is possible by following up a 2-1 overtime win over Putnam County with another 2-1 OT home win over Bleckley County to send the team back to the Elite 8 for the first time since 2007,

Senior Tony Guerrero, who scored both goals in the Putnam victory, set up freshman Manny Hernandez for both of the Bulldogs goals against Bleckley. On the game winner with just :33 second remaining in the second overtime period, Cole Lynn won a 50-50 ball and then flicked it down the field to Guerrero, who worked his way around two defenders on the goal line. This determined move brought the goal keeper to the near post opening up the net for Hernandez. Tony fed Manny and Hernandez booted the ball in to the net and the celebration began.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead with 25:36 seconds remaining in the first half on a determined effort by both Guerrero and Hernandez. Tony was knocked down, by the goal keeper, as he made a pass to Manny, who was also knocked to the turf. However, Hernandez got back up and scored the goal.

The Bulldogs led 1-0 at half, but that advantage disappeared less than two minutes in to the second half when the Royals tied the game.

The two goal performance upped Guerrero's career goal total to 58.

Tony's tying goal came with three minutes left in regulation as the Bulldogs switched the ball from the left side of the field to the right. The pass set up Guerrero for an open shot 10-yards out and to the left of the net and he was able to get it by a very tall, rangy keeper.

Late in the second five-minute overtime session Putnam County pushed the ball up the field trying to score when the Bulldogs intercepted a pass and then they countered back with a long pass down the center of the field to Guerrero. This set Tony up for a one-on-one dual with the keeper. As the goalie was going down to make a potential save Guerrero was able to lift his shot over his arms and in to the net with just 30 seconds left on the clock.

Putnam County took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a cross to the net that was wind-aided. The pass actually was pushed in to the net by a strong gust of wind
