Escar Maldonado (10) and Rene Tinoco stalk a Cross Keys Indian

After exciting Toombs County Bulldog soccer fans with back-to-back 2-1 overtime wins, in which the winning goal was scored in the final half minute, the Dawgs season ended with a 4-0 home loss to Cross Keys in a GHSA Double A State Tournament quarterfinal match in Lyons.

Bulldogs win in overtime again

Manny does it this time

Manny Hernandez (23) celebrates his two-goal game with Jonathan Hattaway (21), Christian Mills (8) and Ricardo Jackson (22)

Elite 8 bound 2011 Toombs County Bulldogs

How unlikely is it for a soccer team to win its first two state playoff games with goals scored in the final half minute of overtime? The Toombs County Bulldogs proved it is possible by following up a 2-1 overtime win over Putnam County with another 2-1 OT home win over Bleckley County to send the team back to the Elite 8 for the first time since 2007,

Senior Tony Guerrero, who scored both goals in the Putnam victory, set up freshman Manny Hernandez for both of the Bulldogs goals against Bleckley. On the game winner with just :33 second remaining in the second overtime period, Cole Lynn won a 50-50 ball and then flicked it down the field to Guerrero, who worked his way around two defenders on the goal line. This determined move brought the goal keeper to the near post opening up the net for Hernandez. Tony fed Manny and Hernandez booted the ball in to the net and the celebration began.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead with 25:36 seconds remaining in the first half on a determined effort by both Guerrero and Hernandez. Tony was knocked down, by the goal keeper, as he made a pass to Manny, who was also knocked to the turf. However, Hernandez got back up and scored the goal.

The Bulldogs led 1-0 at half, but that advantage disappeared less than two minutes in to the second half when the Royals tied the game.

Guerrero saves the day & the season

Tony Guerrero, Toombs County High School's all-time leading scorer, booted in a goal near the end of regulation and then one more at the end of the second overtime as the Bulldogs rallied for a thrilling 2-1 win over Putnam County in the opening round of the GHSA Double A Soccer State Playoffs in Lyons. The two goal performance upped Guerrero's career goal total to 58.

Tony's tying goal came with three minutes left in regulation as the Bulldogs switched the ball from the left side of the field to the right. The pass set up Guerrero for an open shot 10-yards out and to the left of the net and he was able to get it by a very tall, rangy keeper.

Late in the second five-minute overtime session Putnam County pushed the ball up the field trying to score when the Bulldogs intercepted a pass and then they countered back with a long pass down the center of the field to Guerrero. This set Tony up for a one-on-one dual with the keeper. As the goalie was going down to make a potential save Guerrero was able to lift his shot over his arms and in to the net with just 30 seconds left on the clock.

Putnam County took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a cross to the net that was wind-aided. The pass actually was pushed in to the net by a strong gust of wind
