Pups prevail 36-0 in opener

A forty minute delay didn't bother the Toombs County Middle School Bullpups in their 2013 opener. Instead they came out and defeated West Laurens 36-0 in Lyons. A make shift crew was assembled including substitute official Robert Taylor, Bill Benton, Jimmy Price and a guy out of the stands from West Laurens. Artie Wright also came out of the stands in dress pants, a nice shirt and a tie and helped with the chains. Somebody owes Artie for his dry cleaning bill. Y-101 Story

I had a good team behind me the whole day, we came out with the win." Cole also had to come out of the net and smother a shot in the waining moments of the game, "I was just hoping I would get it right then, I knew they were getting real close. We needed to get the ball back down the field."

The scoring in the girls game was almost identical to the boys game. J.R. Trippe scored the only goal in a 1-0 win with 12:42 to play in the second half when Jesse Morris ran on to the ball and then dribbled to the right side of the net. Her low shot just got past the Lady Bullpups diving goalie. TCMS had several opportunites to tie the game in the final minutes but the Lady Bullpups were unable to find the back of the net.

First downs were rare and fumbles and punts were the norm in a scoreless first half. The Bullups defense bailed out the offense twice in the first two quarters by making stops deep on their side after a fumble and a blocked punt.

Nathan Belch, who was the Bullups most effective runner on the wet surface, ran the ball down to the one-yard line and quarterback Jordan Usher finished the two-play drive with a keeper. Alex Ashley ran off the right side of the Pup line and scored the two-point conversion to put TCMS up 8-0 with 22 second left in the third quarter.
